Have you had less energy or noticed muscle loss lately? Do you have lower sex drive than usual? Decreased levels of testosterone may be the cause. This test checks whether your testosterone levels are in the healthy range for your age group.

Testosterone is an important hormone which regulates a significant number of bodily functions from sex drive, fertility and mood to muscle mass, fat distribution, and the production of red blood cells. This test can let you know whether low testosterone may be causing symptoms such as low sex drive and muscle loss. This test may also be useful for women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which can cause higher levels of testosterone and consequent fertility issues.

You should take this test if:

  • You are undergoing chemotherapy or radiation therapy
  • You suffer from Klinefelter syndrome
  • You suffer from type 1 and type 2 diabetes
  • You suffer from haemochromatosis
  • You have a pituitary gland disorder
  • You are obese
  • You suffer from chronic stress
  • You take anabolic steroids
  • You have a family history of low testosterone
  • You suffer from thyroid issues
  • You have kidney or liver infection
  • You have anorexia nervosa

This test should be taken while fasting, or in other words, before you have eaten or drank anything that morning (other than water).
